History of The Family Reunion
According to the family reunion institute at Temple University the family reunions are an important function of society in that the event instills a sense of belonging and concern, transmitting a sense of identity and direction, and strengthening values.

The First Family Reunions
Early family reunion events were marked by deep social, political and emotional impact. Recorded family reunions of the 18th century were often had as a result of having fled war torn areas while enduring and overcoming conditions of incredible human hardship.  After years of being separate from family a time of peace and the means to travel abroad enabled thousands of families to reunite in celebration. Family reunions then became annual events for domestic, business and social reasons. View a list of family reunion records, websites and blogs on the web here.

Cultural Renaissance
Old and young alike are often drawn into a cultural renaissance, researching old records, writing poetry and telling  stories of family legends. Often family members are inspired to perform historical skits at the annual reunions and thus building a strong sense of the family's heritage.

Planning Your Family Reunion
Planning a traditional family reunion is an enriching experience coupled with many opportunities to draw the family together before the actual event. The planning stages of the family reunion are not unlike planning a wedding or Anniversary celebration. Still there are unique aspects of a traditional family reunion that are essential to uniting and empowering the family unit as well as highlighting it's lineage, culture and history. See the "Family Reunion Guide" for event planning tools and resources.
